No one could have anticipated the success that would greet Angry Birds when it flocked to Android and iOS devices several years ago. Despite a plethora of spin-offs, developer Rovio announced that the first official sequel would be made available today.
Aptly titled Angry Birds 2, the sequel see’s fan favorites Red, Chuck and Bomb return, along with new bird Silver. The sequel also sports improved visuals and gameplay, with new spells like blizzard, hot peppers and magic ducks at your disposal. Angry Birds 2 also adds a new mode called Arena, where players can challenge each other for upgrades.
Rovio co-founder, Niklas Hed, stated “Design technology has evolved dramatically since the original game launched in 2009.”
“With Angry Birds 2 we wanted to bring a level of expressive depth and detail seen previously only in a console game or animated series – and create a new game that kids and adults alike won’t be able to put down.”
“Angry Birds 2 doubles down on the core tenets of the original that our fans loved: destruction and more destruction!” adds creative director Patrick Liu. “At the same time it adds a whole new layer of emergent strategy gameplay for both old and new fans to master.”
Angry Birds 2 is out now for iOS and Android devices as a free-to-play title, with micro-transactions available to players who want to stock up on the in-game currency.
