Did Call of Duty force the Wii U into a traditional controller?

by Bill Hess on July 16, 2012

According to industry analyst Michael Pachter, Nintendo had no plans for a traditional controller with the Wii U, but was forced into the “Pro Controller” by the Call of Duty franchise. Pachter told Edge in a recent interview, that the Activision had no intentions of supporting the tablet controller for the Wii U.

“Activision never said anything to me, but I know that [for] big games like Call Of Duty they said, ‘No, we’re not putting it on there if you don’t give us a conventional controller’. So they gave in.”

Nintendo has certainly seen their fair share of missed opportunities this generation because of the non-HD capable hardware, and control scheme of the Wii. Nintendo snubbed “core” gamers with this approach, but since the new console’s announcement back in 2011, Nintendo has been adamant about reaching the “core” audience this time around.

The Wii U Pro Controller will definitely go along way in helping Nintendo reach this goal, but apparently it was Activision that forced the console maker into do so. Regardless of what went on behind the scenes to make the Wii U Pro Controller a reality, Treyarch has a history of producing titles for the Wii, and although they haven’t announced anything yet, they have noted their interest in developing for the next Nintendo console.

I have it on good authority that Microsoft paid Michelle Patcher to say this.

Plus, I am sure I have read where they have already stated how the Wii U Gamepad would enhance the COD experience. Total Burger Slime.

  • Allen

It’s a smart choice. I find most the core games on Wii that force you to use that nunchuck and wiimote to be mostly annoying. It was awesome for Star War Force Unleashed but I hated it on several other games.

  • asdasd

i really dont think so…WiiU couldnt support more than 2 WiiU tablet controllers so that would be a reason and the wii had a more standard controller so…im going with no

  • AIRFREAK

Micheal Pachter is so reliable and always right.

  • Branden

Micheal Pachter is a fucking retard. He has worse prediction and analyst skills than a weatherman. Even they get SOME shit right. Pachter, how do I explain this so your little brain can process it? A company is NOT going to change a controller scheme because of ONE stupid game. Emphasis on stupid. Nintendo has been around for a very long time, and would be smart enough to not make retarded business decisions like making a controller, because they were forced into it from the most overrated polished turd of a game in history. Smoke a pole, Pachter.

  • Mrllive08

I think Pachter is telling the truth! Him and some of the guys from Activision where at a bar having a few drinks and a course one of the guys drunk could have said it off record! Me know Pachter you can’t bait Nintendo please come up with something better! Like Sony is working on a tablet controller for new Ps3. Or Microsoft has Kinect built into the system. Hey that what a stunt man does

  • njb

sounds like activision couldnt even bother attempting to use the tablet control in any way
