Kash Patel’s job is on the line, but he has plans for future WHCA dinner security

Security protocols for the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner are set to undergo a complete overhaul following the shooting that occurred at the Washington Hilton hotel this past weekend. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the approach to safety for future iterations of this high-profile event will look entirely different compared to the procedures that were in place during the recent gathering, The Hill reported.

The incident has prompted intense scrutiny regarding how the event was managed, especially given the various concerns raised by journalists and attendees who were present at the hotel. Attendees at the dinner noted a significant lack of vetting during the event, pointing out that there were no magnetometers, no formal ID checks, and no requirements for guests to present their tickets upon entry.

These lapses have led to widespread questions from the press about how the Secret Service will improve its vetting processes for those who find themselves in close proximity to the president during such a prestigious event. When asked about these failures during a Monday appearance on Fox News’s Fox & Friends, Patel was quick to address the need for a major change.

For now, the focus remains on the investigation into the Washington Hilton shooting and the logistics of ensuring that future press events are handled with the level of security that attendees expect

“Look, great question and we’re going to do it entirely differently,” Patel said during the interview. He emphasized that the planning for future events would be much more rigorous and involved. “You heard the president say we would do this again in short order, 30 days or so. Security posture will be different, I’ll be working with the FBI [and the] police department, to assist in security and provide input,” he added. Patel also noted that his team is working tirelessly to secure answers, stating that the agents investigating the shooting have not slept while in pursuit of information regarding the attack.

The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Allen, is currently in police custody. He is expected to be arraigned on two specific charges, which include using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. Meanwhile, the administration is already looking toward the future.

President Trump has proposed hosting future dinners inside the White House ballroom once construction is complete, which is expected to happen sometime in 2028. During a weekend appearance, Trump stated that he would not allow “criminals and these really bad people change the course of events in our country.”

To ensure these future events are safer, Patel intends to coordinate closely with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin. Patel noted that he has the ability to reach out to Mullin directly to ensure that security measures are overhauled and effectively implemented. “That is the great thing about having this law enforcement team, I can call Markwayne Mullen and say we have to do things differently. We will be better postured for the next event,” Patel said.

While Patel is focused on these security updates, his own tenure as FBI Director has become a subject of intense speculation. Reports have suggested that he could be the next senior official to exit the cabinet, a move that would follow a string of recent departures within the Trump administration.

Questions have emerged within White House circles regarding his future, and at least one senior official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, suggested that it is only a matter of time before a change is made. This official cited a variety of concerns, including an increase in negative media coverage surrounding Patel, which has reportedly become a distraction that the administration is eager to move past.

The political environment in Washington has been particularly volatile lately, with several high-ranking officials leaving their posts since March. The recent departure of US Secretary of the Navy John C Phelan, which was confirmed via a post on X by Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, is just one example of the current turnover. Phelan was replaced by Hung Cao in an acting capacity.

Other significant exits include the retirement of General Randy George, the removal of US Attorney General Pam Bondi, and the resignation of US Labour Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer. Additionally, the role of US Homeland Security Secretary saw a change in March when Kristi Noem was reassigned and replaced by Markwayne Mullin.

Despite the mounting pressure and the rumors surrounding his position, Patel remains tasked with the immediate challenge of reconfiguring security for the upcoming dinner. Whether he remains in his role long enough to see these new protocols through to completion remains an open question for many observers in the capital. The administration has yet to provide any official confirmation regarding the status of the FBI director, leaving the situation in a state of uncertainty as the summer months approach.
