A California salon owner allegedly called police and threatened to call ICE on a group of men. They say they were just waiting for repairs

A salon owner in Riverside, California, is facing intense scrutiny after a video shared on TikTok captured a heated confrontation involving a group of Hispanic men and threats to contact federal authorities. As reported by The Nerd Stash, the situation unfolded in a parking lot where the men were waiting for repairs on their vehicle, only to find themselves at the center of an expletive-filled dispute with the business owner.

The footage shows the owner retreating into her salon and shutting the door while the person recording the incident pans the camera toward the business storefront. The individual who captured the video later provided a more detailed account of the events that transpired that day. She explained that she and her mother-in-law were at a nearby nail salon for pedicures when they observed the salon owner stepping outside and pointing at the men parked nearby.

According to the witness, the owner was demanding that the group leave the premises immediately. Feeling concerned for the safety of the men, the witnesses decided to step in and speak with them. The men, who were primarily Spanish-speaking, explained that they were stranded because their truck had broken down. They were simply waiting for someone to arrive and assist them with the necessary repairs.

What witnesses say happened next

Despite the men offering this clear explanation for their presence in the parking lot, the salon owner remained firm in her stance. She was observed standing at her door while attempting to make a phone call to the police. The tension escalated as the owner allegedly threatened to call ICE on the group. Even after law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and eventually departed, the owner reportedly continued to make these threats against the men. The salon owner has not publicly commented on the incident.

A similar case drew scrutiny when an Arizona warehouse manager allegedly blocked workers from leaving after an ICE tip, with workers saying they were held hostage. The creator of the TikTok video also mentioned that a security guard at the location claimed the woman had been involved in similar disputes in the past, though this information has not been independently verified. The video has triggered a wave of reactions online, with many viewers expressing frustration over the situation.

A major point of the online conversation centered on the decision to involve the police in a situation involving a broken-down vehicle. One viewer specifically asked, “Isn’t that filing a false report?” This line of questioning highlights the legal implications surrounding the act of reporting crimes. Under California law, specifically Penal Code 148.5 PC, there are strict rules regarding what constitutes a false report.

According to the statute, any person who reports to a peace officer that a felony or misdemeanor has been committed, while knowing that the report is false, is guilty of a misdemeanor. This applies to reports made to various law enforcement officials, including those listed in sections 830.1 and 830.2. The law further specifies that this applies if the false information is provided while the officer is performing their duties and the person making the report knows or should have known they are speaking to a peace officer.

Additionally, the statute covers reports made to employees of state or local agencies who are assigned to accept reports from citizens. It is important to note that this section of the penal code does not apply to individuals who are legally required to report instances of child, elder, or dependent adult abuse. While the video captures the intensity of the argument, it does not provide evidence of what was explicitly reported to the police or whether officers determined that any false report had been made.
