Melania Trump has publicly condemned Jimmy Kimmel, labeling him a coward following a controversial parody segment that aired on his late-night show. The First Lady issued a sharp statement on X, criticizing the presenter for remarks made during a monologue leading up to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. This escalation arrives in the wake of a security crisis at the Washington Hilton on April 25, where an armed individual attempted to breach the event while the President and his wife were in attendance.
The tension between the First Lady and the television host began on April 23, when Kimmel performed a parody of the upcoming correspondents’ event. During the broadcast, Kimmel targeted the First Lady with specific comments regarding her marriage. Kimmel stated, “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.” The remark did not sit well with the First Lady, who eventually broke her silence to address the nature of the commentary.
In her statement posted to X, the First Lady did not mince words regarding her perspective on the host. “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country,” she wrote. She expressed her belief that the monologue went beyond the bounds of traditional comedy, adding, “His monologue about my family isn’t comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.”
The First Lady further argued that individuals like Kimmel should not have a platform to reach households on a nightly basis
The First Lady also directed her frustration toward ABC, the network that carries the show. She stated, “A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him.” She called for the network to re-evaluate its relationship with the host, writing, “Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behaviour at the expense of our community.”
This is not the first time the host has faced professional scrutiny. Months prior, Kimmel was briefly removed from the air following comments made after the fatal shooting of activist Charlie Kirk. While that suspension was short-lived, Kimmel acknowledged at the time that his remarks were poorly timed and noted, “it was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.”
The timing of the First Lady’s statement is particularly notable given the violent events that transpired on April 25. During the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a man identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, attempted to enter the ballroom at the Washington Hilton.
Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California, was armed with guns and knives. He charged a security checkpoint in the lobby, leading to an encounter with the Secret Service. Shots were fired during the chaos, and guests sought cover under tables. While one officer was struck in a bullet-resistant vest and is currently recovering, no civilians were reported injured.
The President was moved to a holding room and later to a Presidential Suite before being escorted back to the White House. Speaking at the White House, the President reflected on the incident, stating, “When you’re impactful, they go after you. When you’re not impactful, they leave you alone. They seem to think he was a lone wolf.” Regarding the broader security implications, he noted, “You can have the greatest security in the world but if you’ve got a whack job whose brain is distorted, they can make trouble.”
FBI director Kash Patel confirmed that the agency is currently examining a long gun and shell casings recovered from the scene while interviewing witnesses. Allen is expected to appear in court on Monday to face two firearm-related charges, including assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon. Although police have not yet identified a specific motive, reports suggest the suspect may have been targeting officials.
This event marks the third attempt against the President’s life during his second term, following a near-miss at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and an arrest at his West Palm Springs golf course. The dinner has been rescheduled, and the investigation remains active as authorities piece together the details of the breach.
