Okay, let’s talk about FIFA World Cup 2026 for all the wrong reasons, again. We are all aware of the controversy around it: the skyrocketing ticket prices. If that wasn’t enough, the NJ transit drama further sparked concerns about how we’re going to visit the stadium the cheap way after already draining our wallets on tickets. Even Donald Trump admitted that he wouldn’t have paid $1,000 just to attend the matches.
Well, the FIFA President Gianni Infantino somehow defended these prices. But according to the Daily Mail, Washington lawmakers are now looking to FIFA to justify the outrageous ticket prices. They have issued an open letter expressing their concerns about the event’s uneven ticket prices and claimed, “Tickets are reportedly being held back for matches, creating the appearance of limited availability even when large numbers remain unsold.”
The open letter from Reps. Nellie Pou and Frank Pallone Jr. mention, “We are deeply concerned by reports that FIFA is employing opaque pricing, shifting rules, and potentially deceptive practices that are making it difficult for fans to access seats.” It also seems to put pressure on FIFA: “We write seeking more information about these ticketing practices, including how FIFA is ensuring that the World Cup is affordable for all fans and responding to fans who feel misled.”
How did Gianni defend these prices? By blaming the US market
A thousand dollars just to attend the Team USA opener is indeed shocking, but Infantino appears to be putting the blame on the US market. The president of FIFA said, “We have to look at the market. We are in the market in which entertainment is the most developed in the world, so we have to apply market rates.” He started with this, then talked about how tickets are allowed to be resold nationwide.
“In the US, it is permitted to resell tickets as well, so if you were to sell tickets at the price which is too low, these tickets will be resold at a much higher price. Even though some people are saying that the ticket prices we have are high, they still end up on the resale market at an even higher price, more than double our price.” For some, he may be making a point, but ticket prices, combined with transit costs, make plans for the World Cup 2026 look less promising for fans.
After this, Gianni backed his claim by mentioning ticket prices for attending US games. He claimed that even national sports aren’t possible for at least $300. However, ticket availability for recent games sits quite low, with Yankees vs. Rangers priced at just the cost of a routine meal ($8), while Knicks playoff tickets are around $192, as reported by the Daily Mail.
Following Trump, many notable figures appear to be breaking their silence on the FIFA World Cup 2026 ticket chaos. With the matches now hosted in the nation, every passionate fan deserves a chance to attend, given that many stadium seats remain empty due to the price hike.
