Anyone who bought a Wii U last year knows this situation all too well. Â A console launches, and after the initial rush of new software to play, it dies down. Â Big budget games just can’t be churned out fast enough, nor are they profitable ventures when systems have a low installed base.
Enter Sony’s indie strategy. Â It’s one that Shuhei Yoshida thinks will fill the gap between the big releases on the PlayStation 4. Â In a recent interview with Famitsu, the PlayStation Exec explained why this strategy is crucial to the PS4.
“Huge titles from large makers take time to develop; they can’t just be brought out immediately. Â However, with the indie scene, especially in the West, we’re seeing really neat games coming out from there pretty much every week.”
And if Sony’s recent showing of indie titles is any indication, they aren’t going to fall into the trap that the Wii U did. Â With their self-publishing model, PlayStation 4 gamers are always going to have something to play, it just might not be on the level of Uncharted or inFamous.
