The PlayStation 4 will support Bluetooth and USB headsets, but it looks like it won’t be right at launch. A Sony representative explained that this functionality for the system will indeed be patched in with a system update following the console’s release, according to a report from Engadget.
The good news is that the PlayStation 4 will come with a mono earbud headset that includes a microphone for online play out of the box. The bad news is, those pricey headsets that you use on the PlayStation 3 likely won’t be working for game chat when the system arrives in mid-November.
It looks like both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 will need to be updated post-launch in order for chat functionality to work for older peripherals. While it’s sounding like older headsets that function on optical connections like the Astro line will work for game audio, chat is going to be a problem for everyone, and you’ll be forced to use the included devices.
Sony has not yet commented on when this post-launch patch will arrive that allows for Bluetooth devices to function on the PS4.
