The Russo brothers wanted to make Captain America: Civil War just after finishing Captain America: The Winter Soldier. However, they weren’t sure if Marvel would accept a movie about heroes fighting each other. Well it appears Batman vs Superman helped Marvel allow the brothers to go ahead with Civil War.
The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Joe Russo and he admits there was some hesitation to greenlight Captain America: Civil War at the start. The movie is not like a traditional superhero film and Russo said it was risky to try and undertake it.
The brothers were in talks with Marvel about the idea before Batman vs Superman was announced, but it wasn’t greenlit yet. It wasn’t until Warner Bros. announced Batman vs Superman did Marvel like the idea of Civil War and let them make the movie.
Russo mentioned Kevin Feige said: “You guys are absolutely right.’ We needed to do something challenging with the material or we were going to start to lose the audience”
If you remember correctly, Batman vs Superman was first announced back in July 2013. It might have been around the same time that Feige made up his mind on allowing the Russos to make Captain America: Civil War. It appears Feige made the right call as some people are calling Civil War to be the the best Marvel movie to date.
