Assassin’s Creed Mirage Aims to Restore the Assassin’s Creed Series to Its Former Glory

Assassin’s Creed Mirage will take players to ninth-century Baghdad and many are intrigued by this setting, wanting to delve into everything that awaits. So far for the game we have seen a world premiere trailer and gameplay trailer. Each gave many Assassin’s Creed fans goosebumps with how much it reminded them of the golden age of Assassin’s Creed.

The gameplay trailer at the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023 was a particular standout. Basim is the protagonist of the game and his assassin skills were on full show as he was fluidly moving in combat to air assassinate enemies. This caused a sense of nostalgia for fans of the series who remember the older games in their glory.

The Hidden Blade also made the pulsing steel “shing!” sounds as it was plunged into enemies. This resonated beautifully and it showcased that Assassin’s Creed Mirage seems set on combining the modern gameplay with the old. The movement system in Mirage is a lot more reminiscent of Assassin’s Creed Revelations than what it was in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Recent Assassin’s Creed games in the timeline are still brilliant games, but the effective and smooth parkour traversal with how the player navigated the world was evidently missing. This went hand in hand with modern RPG elements found in games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. For example, picking up a lot of gear to hope for better rarity simply feels out of place in an Assassin’s Creed game. Mirage however seems as though it will be taking us back to the series’ former days when immersion and story were the focus.

A popular Reddit post by Gnomsky sums up the feeling felt by many perfectly about the series. The older style of Assassin’s Creed games is being missed by many and this post was from two years ago: clearly showing that the same feeling is still present today. A lot of people also grew up in some small way with the Assassin’s Creed series so it makes sense as to why those feelings are so strong.

Fans have been waiting a long time for a game like Assassin’s Creed Mirage to be back on the cards. If the gameplay is anything to go by, it looks as though wishes will be answered. Basim’s story is just around the corner and we could see the golden days of Assassin’s Creed back in full swing with this generation. Future plans for the Assassin’s Creed series also consist of Codename: Hexe and Codename: Red.

Codename Red in particular is set in Feudal Japan which is a location that a select number of games have been covering in recent years such as Ghost of Tsushima. Many may wonder if the project will maintain the older roots of the franchise in a similar way to what Mirage seeks to do.
