Game of the Year – Super Smash Bros.

Kyle – 2014 was another great year for games, with hits like Titanfall, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Alien: Isolation, and Bayonetta 2 all offering fantastic and original experiences for gamers to enjoy. However, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U stood head and shoulders above the rest, largely thanks to its expertly crafted fighting mechanics and always enjoyable multiplayer action. After a slightly disappointing entry on the Wii, Super Smash Bros. returned with a vengeance, combining the best elements of the series with gorgeous HD visuals and tons of new modes and unlockables.

We got a sneak peek at the amazing gameplay with the 3DS version earlier in the year, but the HD entry was the one we all were waiting for. The fast, frenetic action of the series was totally on-point, delivering some of the most enjoyable gameplay of the year, all while offering up couch co-op and online multiplayer like no other. The fact that it all worked on day one and beyond is simply the cherry on top of this fantastic gaming sundae.

What else can be said about Super Smash Bros. for Wii U? It was the best fighting game of the year, the best Nintendo game of the year, and the overall best game of the year for 2014.

Runners Up: Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Dark Souls 2
