Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens Kylo Ren Black Series Figure Review

Force Friday is now upon us and several toy retailers have started selling Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens action figures. We managed to pick up the 6 inch Black Series Kylo Ren.

This Kylo Ren figure from the Black Series is quite awesome. My brother and I have been collecting several figures from this line, and this has to be one of my favorites. He’s right up there with Boba Fett and Darth Maul in terms of cool factor.

First of all, don’t be alarmed if the red part of the lightsaber falls off when you try and get him out of the packaging. The red part fell off when I opened him and I thought I needed to super glue it back in. However, you can snap the pieces back in. Don’t worry if this happens to you as well.

It’s also worth mentioning this figure was kind of hard to get. A lot of the Black Series action figures were sold out from all of the hardcore fans that went to the midnight launches. Luckily I found this figure at another retailer that still had them in stock. The figures are likely to be snapped up in the weekend I’m sure. Second shipments are expected to come out next week or the week after.

You don’t have to worry about the packaging giving away any spoilers from the Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens movie. At the back it just says: “A dark warrior strong with the Force. Kylo Ren commands First Order missions with a temper as fiery as his unconventional lightsaber.” It’s quite funny how J.J. Abrams said recently the character is not a Sith, although the packaging still suggests he knows a lot about the Force.

The figure itself looks and feels great. He has a cloth hood and cape. The only plastic part is the tunic that is around his neck and the lower part of his body. He also has a thick belt that fits nicely on the middle of his body. Kylo Ren’s helmet looks accurate and the paint detail is mostly solid. I did not see any errors on the paint detail.

The only weak part of the entire figure in my opinion is the lightsaber itself. Not only is it quite flimsy, but it’t not translucent as previous lightsabers I have seen in the past. I feel they used a darker shade of red paint than I would have liked. I always preferred the translucent material as it makes the lightsaber look like it’s glowing. This figure just appears as if Kylo Ren is holding a red sword.

Articulation for the figure is pretty good, although his big hood does limit the amount of movement he can do. He cannot look up or down, but you can move his head side-to-side. His arm and leg movements are pretty good as they have good rotation. He also bends at the elbows and knees as well which is nice. He also has ankle pivot and a wrist swivel too.

In terms of size, Kylo Ren stands at around 6.5 inches tall. He’s pretty much on par with the rest of the Black Series Star Wars figurines. He looks pretty cool going up against Darth Maul or any other figures from the previous wave. It’s also worth mentioning the only accessory this figure comes with is the lightsaber and nothing else. He doesn’t have an extra pair of hands or anything else like that.

Overall, the Kylo Ren Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens action figure is great. I’m glad Hasbro puts more detail to its Black Series range of toys. This is definitely worth buying if you are a toy collector or a Star Wars fan.
