Dragon Ball Super Might Rehash Recent Movie Storylines

Dragon Ball Super arrives in only three days and the placement of the timeline seems to get even more confusing the closer we get to the debut. We speculated the other day about a possible time jump in the early part of the series and it sounds like that may be true in part, with a twist.

To celebrate the upcoming start of Dragon Ball Super, the V-Jump Channel held a special “Dragon Ball Super Complete Showcase Event,” which was also live streamed online. The event had guest appearances from voice actors like Goku’s VA, Masako Nozawa, but that was not the most intriguing part.

According to Kanzenshuu, following the opening introductions by the series’ producer Atsushi Kido, a message was put on screen from Akira Toriyama that gave us the most details yet about what Dragon Ball Super will be about.

‘“Dragon Ball Super” is a complete continuation of the Majin Buu story arc. It’s got a bit of post-battle aftermath, continues with the “Battle of Gods” arc where the God of Destruction Beerus appears and the “Revival of ‘F’” arc where Freeza comes back to life, and then, I’ve written a strange new story where they finally depart from this universe. They’re fighting against their neighbors, Universe 6! They’ll yell at me if I give away too many spoilers, so I’ll keep the rest a secret, but they’re chasing after giant Super Dragon Balls; I think things will unfold in a bright and simple way, that will be really fun and exciting!

“Since it’s another universe, loads of new characters will turn up. I’ll do my best to draw the tons of character designs necessary, so I’m looking forward to this too.

“You know, it suddenly occurs to me that somewhere along the line the Dragon Ball anime has become quite a huge story. Since I’m the guy who drew the thing, it’s a bit weird for me to say this, but when I first started out I never dreamed it would have a universe as a setting (laughs). Don’t worry though, it’s still going to be the same sort of easy-to-understand content as always. Please be sure to watch Dragon Ball Super on TV!”

We wondered previously how the first episode was set only six months after the conclusion of the Buu saga, but the series seemed to include Beerus and Whis that didn’t show up until Battle of the Gods. It seems peculiar to recreate the events of the movies in the show itself, but that is what it sounds like will be happening according to Toriyama.

Unless Toriyama is considering the two movies themselves as “arcs,” which is strange wording, it sounds like the show will do something with the movies. Perhaps they mean having episodes that would be directly before or after and have the movie only between, but we’ll have to wait and see.

More interesting than anything is the mention of them fighting against Universe 7, which seems to have the heavier Beerus that is supposedly named Champa. Will we see alternate versions of other characters or is this another universe entirely with completely different characters? The former could create so many possibilities, including a Goku that followed through on the plan to destroy Earth instead of hitting his head and becoming good as a baby.

Dragon Ball Super will debut this Sunday in Japan on July 5.
