‘They won’t need to be greedy’: Ex-GTA dev reveals what Rockstar will actually charge for GTA 6, and why

He predicts an unexpected price tag.

Former Rockstar Games developer Mike York has weighed in on the ongoing speculation surrounding the price of the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, offering a perspective that may ease the nerves of eager gamers. Contrary to widespread rumours suggesting a $100 price tag, York predicts that the base game will more likely retail for around $70.

The potential cost of GTA 6 has been a hot topic ever since conversations about its release date began circulating. Many industry watchers and fans assumed that Rockstar might push the price to $100, a move that would have marked a major shift for AAA titles and potentially reshaped pricing standards across the entire gaming industry. Such a steep price increase could have set a new precedent, influencing not only blockbuster franchises but also mid-tier and indie releases.

According to Dexerto, Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios, commented on the situation. He said: “Everyone’s just waiting for GTA 6 to do it.” His remark highlighted the broader anticipation within the gaming world: whatever Rockstar decides, it could spark a ripple effect throughout the market.

Rockstar doesn’t need to push prices higher with guaranteed record sales

York, who worked as an animator at Rockstar, thinks his former company doesn’t need such an aggressive price. He told Esports Insider that $70 is the normal price for new releases and makes the most sense. He doesn’t believe the base game will cost $100.

York explained that Rockstar will sell so many copies that they don’t need to charge $100. Why create bad feelings with customers when the game will break sales records anyway? Raising the price without reason just creates negative reactions. Staying at $70 is smart business.

“They don’t need to leave that sour taste in people’s mouths if they don’t have to, so I don’t think they’ll do that.” York said. But he also mentioned one possibility for a higher price. He thinks there might be a $99 day-one pre-order version. This premium edition would include a huge bundle for GTA Online when it launches, like an apartment or other big perks to help players start strong. Fans are already excited about the actress playing protagonist Lucia and what her story will bring.

Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick hasn’t said much about the exact price. However, he has hinted that fans always get more value than what they pay for. Considering how big and replayable these games are, he has a point.

York also talked about the release date. The game has been delayed to November 19, 2026. York is confident there won’t be more delays. He said the team is mostly just polishing the game now. Players are particularly curious about Lucia’s ankle monitor and gameplay features it might introduce. This is good news because another delay could push back the PS6 and new Xbox release dates.
