Aaron Paul, the star best known for Breaking Bad, is far more likely to sign on for a potential Dispatch Season 2, but it took the game’s massive success to convince him, as per Eurogamer. That’s fantastic news because the creators of the game were genuinely worried he wouldn’t ever work with them again after the grueling process of making the first season.
Game director Nick Herman admitted that if Paul had known the true scope of the project, he probably wouldn’t have agreed to do it in the first place. Narrative director Pierre Shorette definitely agreed with that sentiment, stating Paul “would have said no for sure.”
Paul plays the central character, Robert, in the game, meaning his acting commitment wasn’t light. He features throughout the entire story, and Shorette described the effort required as “grueling.” They had to keep bringing Paul back for recording sessions over two full years because he features in basically “the entire f***ing game.”
Certain fan interactions in Paris might have played a role in convincing Aaron Paul for another rodeo
Shorette likened the process to “water torture, a drip here and there.” He explained that they would call Paul after eight weeks of silence, asking for another four-hour session. Shorette recalled Paul saying, “F***, I thought I was done with this.” I can only imagine that frustration; two years of sporadic calls for a single role sounds like a total headache, even if you love the script.
Thankfully, Paul did respond positively to the material initially. Shorette noted that they had a great casting director who had a relationship with Paul, and the actor was “feeling it.” Paul had previously worked on the dark animated comedy Bojack Horseman, which shares some tonal DNA with Dispatch. Shorette said, “Thank god too, because I don’t know what this is without him at this point.”
What really changed Paul’s mind about the project and cemented his interest in future seasons was the massive fan response. Paul has actually moved to France, and Shorette mentioned that Paul was approached by fans on the streets of Paris who recognized him specifically from the game. Herman pointed out that this is huge because Paul has been in the public eye for so long, and usually, people approach him only to shout references about Breaking Bad.
Herman emphasized that for someone to walk up and say, “Hey, this video game that is coming out right now: I love you in it,” just doesn’t happen for the actor. Fans were hitting him up while the game was still coming out episodically, saying, “Hey, love you in Dispatch.” Paul was reportedly shocked that the game had reached France and that it “kind of popped off,” much like Black Myth Wukong, which created a massive boom in tourism for China’s Shanxi province.
It’s worth remembering that it’s just Paul’s very recognizable voice acting in the game, not a motion-captured digital likeness. Shorette said that the fan recognition was the moment “it clicked for him, like, oh this is real.” He realized the game had become a definite success that reached far beyond the typical gaming audience.
Because of that commercial and critical success, Herman laughingly admitted that the game “kind of needed to do what it did for him to be interested in doing it again.” If you loved Paul’s performance as Robert, you can definitely expect to see him return if AdHoc moves forward with Dispatch Season 2, which seems incredibly likely. For the time being, you can watch Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul episodes in order.
