This wildly successful video game is reportedly getting a new expansion after a decade of its launch, and the timing makes perfect sense

Wind's howling.

CD Projekt Red is reportedly planning to drop a brand-new, paid expansion for the decade-old masterpiece, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. That’s right, even though the game officially wrapped up its major content years ago, new reports suggest fresh adventures for Geralt are secretly underway, as per Video Games Chronicle.

The rumors surrounding this surprise content aren’t just based on vague whispers, either. The potential timeline for the expansion is already being discussed in detail. A Polish analyst, Mateusz Chrzanowski, recently went on record stating that he was expecting “the next paid add-on (DLC) for The Witcher 3” to land in May 2026. While that date seems awfully specific for a game company that typically keeps things under wraps, the prediction does line up with financial hints the studio has been dropping.

CD Projekt’s CFO Piotr Nielubowicz noted in a recent financial report that, “there is a chance that new content hinted upon in recent calls and reports may see release in the coming year, having an impact on our results.” I think that sounds like a serious hint that something substantial is coming, and it’s likely far bigger than just a few cosmetic updates.

Blood and Wine was not the ultimate farewell for Geralt, it seems

Adding fuel to the fire, an insider in the Polish gaming community, Borys NieÅ›pielak, claimed last year that this new content was being developed in secret. He even pointed the finger at Fool’s Theory. That’s the very same studio that’s currently remaking The Witcher 1 for CD Projekt. NieÅ›pielak later confirmed that his information was verified by “several” independent sources, making this whole thing seem less like a rumor and more like an open secret.

Naturally, when asked about the reports, a spokesperson for CD Projekt Red stuck to the official line. They simply stated that the company does not comment on rumor or speculation. That’s what we expected them to say, but the timing of this potential expansion makes perfect sense when you look at how busy the company is right now.

CD Projekt is currently deep into multiple massive projects set in the Witcher universe. We know they’re working hard on The Witcher 4, which will kick off a brand new saga for the franchise. Plus, there’s the full, ground-up remake of The Witcher 1 in development, and even a new multiplayer game set within the same universe. Adding a surprise expansion to The Witcher 3 would be a genius move after its somewhat lukewarm next-gen update.

Considering how much anticipation surrounds the future of the series, dropping a huge new expansion for the most beloved entry seems like a surefire way to keep us all happy until The Witcher 4 finally arrives. I, for one, can’t wait to jump back into Geralt’s world again, no matter which way they decide to go with the base game endings and make way for the sequel.
