7DFPS: SUPERHOT Impresses

by William Schwartz

The best game to come out of the most recent 7-Day FPS game jam is SUPERHOT from Blue Brick. Even better, it is available to play now for free in your browser with the help of the Unity plugin and thanks to a very warm reception the game is now even featured on Steam’s Greenlight platform.

Described as a short and intense game, SUPERHOT plays out like a first-person version of Braid or any roguelike where everybody moves at the same time. Players are required to use temporal strategy and dexterity in order to dodge oncoming bullets and attack their enemies which creates a unique experience.

While this seems very easy at first the game quickly ramps up in difficulty and becomes a combination of puzzle and action game, particularly when tasked with taking out three enemies firing at you down a narrow hallway for instance. Limited ammunition means players are required to get close by dodging bullets in order to obtain a new gun which can lead to some intense and stressful situations.

If you have some time to spare, and lets be honest, we’re all just sitting around waiting for GTA V to drop at this point – SUPERHOT is a great way to kill 15 minutes while simultaneously bringing the pain to some bright red enemies.
