A divorced man says he still pays alimony even though his ex-wife works full time, and that wasn’t even the most expensive part of his divorce

A man on Reddit says he still pays alimony to his ex-wife even though she works full time. He claimed that was not the most expensive part of his divorce, as he also had to pay a lump sum to keep his business after a court determined his ex-wife was entitled to a share of the business’s increased value during their marriage.

The comment came from a broader discussion on Reddit’s r/AskMen subreddit, where a user asked men who had decided not to marry what led them to that choice. As first highlighted by The Daily Dot, responses cited divorce fears, financial risks, unhappy family relationships, and a preference for independence.

Financial uncertainty emerged as a major concern for some commenters, especially those who had already been through a divorce. They described experiences involving spousal support and the division of assets that made them reluctant to marry again.

Not everyone thinks a prenup solves the problem

Another man, who said he is currently going through a divorce, claimed the process reinforced his concerns about marriage. Some commenters suggested prenuptial agreements could help couples set financial expectations before marrying, while others felt such agreements did not offer enough protection once trust broke down.

For some, the decision not to marry was shaped by what they saw growing up. One commenter, whose parents separated when he was 12, recalled watching his mother enter another marriage that also ended in divorce, and said the hostility and conflict in his family led him to question the purpose of marriage.

Another commenter cited “seeing so many marriages fail,” while one wrote, “I’ve never seen a marriage I envied.” A separate Reddit post about a husband’s work wife nickname also drew debate over emotional infidelity.

Other men said their choice was less about the fear of divorce and more about independence. They reportedly enjoyed living alone, pursuing hobbies, traveling, and having personal space without the expectations that can come with marriage.

One commenter described an uncle who never married and happily spent his weekends repairing cars and fishing. Another said he had been single for years and preferred focusing on his hobbies, his dogs, and his close friendships.

Some commenters argued that marriage is not the only way to express commitment. One man said he and his girlfriend decided to remain child-free and live separately, claiming the arrangement gave them space and improved their relationship.

Another commenter wrote, “I’m not afraid of commitment. I just don’t believe love becomes more genuine when it becomes legally binding.”

Attack of the Fanboy was unable to independently verify the commenters’ claims, as this originates solely from a Reddit thread.
