California music professor Robert Komaniecki says he received a threatening message about his young daughters after posting about fraternities online. As he detailed in an Instagram post that has drawn over a million views, he tracked the man down and called him to confront him.
In the video, Komaniecki tells viewers, “A guy on Instagram threatened me from what he thought was a private account, so I called him on his cell phone.” He said he had “caught some heat” for saying fraternities are bad environments, and while most responses weren’t a “problem,” one person got “pushy.” According to Komaniecki, the man called him an underpaid “jealous loser,” which the professor joked was “totally true, by the way.”
When he laughed it off, Komaniecki said the man got angrier and “somehow looked up the name of my wife and kids.” He said the man then made “this vaguely threatening comment with the clear implication being that I should shut my mouth if I don’t want anything to happen to my three- and five-year-old daughters.” The professor said he did some “sleuthing” to figure out the man’s school and fraternity, then cross-referenced its alumni against the initials in his profile to find him.
He says the man went quiet once he realized who was calling
Komaniecki claimed he identified the man as an Alabama resident in his thirties who worked in “soil and mulch.” He said he called the man the next day and told him, “Hi, is this you? I’m Robert from Instagram, and you threatened my children last night.”
According to Komaniecki, the man went silent before apologizing and claiming he had been drunk. When Komaniecki asked what he thought he should do, the man hung up, and Komaniecki said all of the man’s accounts, including LinkedIn and his website, were removed afterward.
Komaniecki said he had recorded the call, telling his audience it is legal in both his and the man’s locations, and had archived all of the man’s information. He said he then filed a police report in both his and the man’s counties.
In the comments, one person said they were glad Komaniecki took action because “drunk actions are sober thoughts.” Another applauded him, sarcastically noting that threatening someone’s children hardly makes a man a “good guy.”
Others joked about Komaniecki’s job, with one user writing that teachers shouldn’t be underestimated “because they can tan your hide without even leaving their homes.” Another added, “I am loving this new era of consequences for trolls,” and actor Sharon Stone also left a comment applauding him.
Attack of the Fanboy was unable to independently verify the other man’s side of the story, as this account originates solely from Komaniecki’s Instagram post.
