Battlefield 4 will see a lot of tweaks to the way the game is played. Some of them are major, with the addition of the Commander Mode and gameplay changes like Levolution. But there are many other changes afoot, and DICE has just recently revealed that Field Upgrades will be taking the place of Class Specializations in Battlefield 4.
DICE says that these Field Upgrades will essentially be “deeper class specialization” than what was found in Battlefield 3.
Class Specialization played a big role in tight knit squads for Battlefield 3, it will be interesting to see how DICE takes this deeper with the Field Upgrades. It’s somewhat of a return to form from DICE. One of their previous games featured Field Upgrades, Battlefield 2142. So we should probably expect a tiered system that allows teams to earn better rewards and upgrades commensurate with performance in the game. You could even drop down a tier if your entire squad was lost in a battle.
We’ll have to wait and see if this system in its entirety will be coming over to Battlefield 4, or whether DICE will just be using this as a starting point for the Field Upgrade System in Battlefield 4.
