Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Worldwide Studios has just now announced on Twitter that the highly anticipated Deep Down on PS4 from Capcom will be a “free 2 play” title.
Capcom just announced that "deep down" will be a f2p game on
PS4, planning open Beta near the launch of PS4 in Japan. @Yoshi_OnoChin— ?ɐpıɥsoʎ ıǝɥnɥs? (@yosp) September 21, 2013
The Playstation 4 already has a strong F2P lineup with multiplayer games like Planetside 2, War Thunder, Blacklight Retribution and Warframe all making their way to the next-generation console shortly and Deep Down adds another unique game to that list.
Blessing or Curse?
While it’s rude to look a gift horse in the mouth, with Capcom’s track record of DLC-on-disc and other gaming blasphemies, it is hard to see how this is going to work out to be a plus for consumers. Personally I am a fan of paying full price and getting the whole game in one package rather than being forced to cough up piecemeal for minor portions of a game. Only time will tell if this is a good move for one of PS4’s most beautiful and highly anticipated titles.
