The International is the largest DOTA 2 tournament in the world.  The tournament started with a 1.6 million dollar prize pool.  In a unique move Valve announced the sale of a digital book, the Compendium, 3 months ago at a price of $10USD.  From every compendium purchase, $2.50 was added to the prize pool for the event.  This has proven to be extremely successful as the prize pool has now jumped to become the single largest prize pool in e-sports history at over 2.7 million dollars.  This surpasses the 2 million dollar prize pool of Riot games League of Legends season 2 world championship.

The prize pool breaks down as follows;

  • 2nd – $600,155
  • 3rd  – $272,798
  • 4th  – $190,958
  • 5th  – $109,119
  • 6th  – $109,119
  • 7th  – $40,920
  • 8th  – $40,920

DOTA 2 is a 5 v 5 combat game with an emphasis on teamwork and mastering each characters individual skill set.  DOTA 2 has recently come out of beta and can be freely downloaded from the steam store.  The international can be watched live online through the DOTA 2 client.  The tournament will run from the 7th-11th of August at the Benaroya Hall in Seattle.
