John Boyega (Finn) recently had a chance to speak about Star Wars: Episode 8 and he continued to tease that the new film will be much darker than Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens.

Boyega spoke with Variety where he discussed the direction of Star Wars: Episode 8 and how Rian Johnson is handling things. He also teased the film is ‘bigger’ than The Force Awakens.

Boyega said: “Rian Johnson is great. It’s a different take, darker, bigger. Someone will say: “How do you get bigger than ‘Force Awakens?’” But it’s crazy

Boyega also mentioned that we may not see a romance between Finn and Rey in the next film. He stresses that the two are just close friends and that’s it.

Finn and Rey – they’re just friends. Finn is a storm trooper, so he doesn’t really know what’s going on. So the romance thing is something that’s going to be interesting in the next installment. It’s not going to go the way you think it’s going to go

This makes sense as Jedi aren’t usually allowed to love as that could lead to the dark side. Love was one of the reasons why Anakin Skywalker went to the dark side as he couldn’t let go of his feelings towards his mother and Padme.

Bear in mind, plans could change as the movie was delayed in order for the script to be rewritten. It’s possible Rey and Finn could still be an item, or maybe Finn finds someone else.
