Video game based movies has really never worked out all that well over the years, with most being disappointing both critically and financially. One that is hoping to turn around that trend however is the Assassin’s Creed movie that has is being handled by Ubisoft themselves, and now we have the first trailer that continues to give us hope that this may turn out really well.

The trailer was promised to be coming today earlier in the week, but reports this morning made it sound like it wouldn’t be coming until Thursday. However, as with many big movies lately, the trailer ended up debuting tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The trailer starts off with what appears to be an amnesiac character that is played by Michael Fassbender, who is supposed to be named Callum Lynch. This is where the female lead Marion Cotillard comes into play, as she appears to work for Abstergo Industries from the games and tells him that he was executed the day before and now will be entering the Animus.

This premise sounds similar to the plot of the games we have seen in the series, which is wisely offering a separate storyline from what we’ve seen before. Upon entering the Animus, the action looks fantastic with chase and fighting sequences, along with gorgeous environments. The only real downside to the trailer is the very out of place music selection, but at least that is only for the trailer with the actual movie content looking great so far.

You can check out the trailer for yourself below and look for Assassin’s Creed to release in theaters on December 21.
