A Fortnite and Monopoly crossover is likely happening, as new leaked cosmetics reveal. The collaboration will bring both memorable and novel Monopoly playing pieces to Fortnite as back bling, which is a cosmetic item that can be worn in-game. According to the leaks, the additions are scheduled for Chapter 2, Season 8 of Fortnite.
Developed and published by Epic Games, Fortnite is a popular online game that is no stranger to crossovers with popular brands. In the past, Fortnite has collaborated with a range of celebrities including Will Smith and Ariane Grande, as well as brands ranging from Ferrari to Balenciaga.
Details of the Fornite and Monopoly crossover have been unearthed thanks to data-miners who have also leaked the new cosmetics they found. As popular Fortnite leaker HYPEX revealed on Twitter, the new leaked cosmetics come in the form of back bling resembling popular Monopoly playing pieces. This includes the battleship, the racecar, the penguin, the t-rex, the tophat, the hazel cat, the rubber ducky, and the Scottie dog. The descriptions beneath the cosmetics suggest that they will be introduced in Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 8. Epic Games has yet to comment on the potential crossover.
Reactions to the crossover have been mixed. With Epic waging legal battles against Apple over in-app purchases, the collaboration with Monopoly could be seen as a commentary on alleged monopolies over app distribution. In a ruling made on the 10th of September regarding the Epic vs Apple lawsuit, Judge Rogers ruled in favor of Apple for nine counts but also ruled that Apple will no longer be allowed to stop developers from directing customers away from Apple in-app purchases. It is not difficult to see why the Fortnite and Monopoly crossover could be seen as a statement from Epic.
Some popular content creators like Shiina were surprised that content creators were not given the items, and were not given any announcements concerning the Fortnite and Monopoly crossover either. This has led to Shiina speculating that a Monopoly mode may be coming in v18.10.
This would not be the first time there has been a crossover between Fortnite and Monopoly. In 2018, Hasbro released Monopoly: Fortnite Edition. This was a special edition of Monopoly which fuses the board game with elements from Fortnite. There already have been collaborations confirmed for Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 8, including a Naruto crossover. Data-miners have also dug up a Fortnite and Batman crossover. As HYPEX reveals, this collaboration introduces new Batman-themed weapons including an Explosive Batarang and a Batman Grapnel Gun.
Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Android.
