A recent shooting at a neighborhood block party in Vienna, Georgia, has resulted in two deaths and 35 injuries during the early hours of Sunday. The incident occurred during a homecoming celebration that drew more than 1,000 people to Pine Street, according to CBS News. Sheriff deputies were already patrolling the area when they heard gunfire ring out at 1:25 AM. Upon arriving at the scene, they found multiple people who had been shot.
While the shooting originated on Pine Street, the two individuals who were fatally wounded were discovered several blocks away from that initial location. Dooly County Coroner Brett Walls confirmed that the two victims were men, aged 20 and 23. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies on them.
Dooly County Sheriff Craig Peavy stated that at least 50 shots were fired across two different locations that were about one block apart. Beyond the gunshot wounds, some block party attendees were injured after being hit by cars as drivers scrambled to flee the area. The injured range in age from 14 to 51, Peavy said.
At least 50 shots were fired at the block party, and police still have no suspects
Officials have confirmed that 25 of the 35 injured people were hospitalized. Those victims were transported to several different medical facilities in the region to receive treatment for their injuries. Some were in critical condition on Sunday evening, and others were stable, according to Peavy. Later Sunday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that the probe remained active and ongoing.
No arrests had been announced by Sunday evening. The agency joined the investigation after the Dooly County Sheriff’s Office, the first to respond to the scene, requested its assistance. Authorities have not yet released information regarding a possible suspect or a potential motive for the violence. However, Peavy has since identified the two men killed at the block party as Jaquevion Jackson of Cordele and Macaleb Jackson of Hawkinsville. Authorities have not publicly identified the injured individuals.
Vienna is located about 50 miles south of Macon. The block party was not a school event, as it was an unofficial gathering held during homecoming weekend for Dooly County High School. Vienna Mayor Eddie Daniels said the city had not issued a permit for the block party, which took place about a block from his home. Georgia State Patrol and personnel from neighboring counties were sent to assist Dooly County deputies at the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has asked block party attendees to contact its Perry office, as it has not named a suspect.
