J.J. Abrams revealed a big bombshell at the Tribeca Film Festival as he mentioned that Rey’s parents were not in Star War 7: The Force Awakens. The director has somewhat backtracked on the original statement and has clarified what he actually meant.

Entertainment Weekly caught up with Abrams and it sounds like Rey’s parents could have been in Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens after all. However, he just wanted to clarify that neither Rey or the audience found out about the parents.

He said: “What I meant was that she doesn’t discover them in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world“. Many people believe that she is the daughter of Luke Skywalker which might explain why she is so powerful with the Force.

Another theory is that Rey could be related to Jyn Erso who is the character Felicity Jones plays in Star Wars: Rogue One. The timeline fits since Rogue One is set a few years before A New Hope. Not to mention both Rey and Jyn look alike and both are portrayed by British actresses.

We are unlikely to find out who Rey’s parents are until Star Wars: Episode 8 comes out in 2017. It will be a long wait for fans so hopefully Disney can avoid leaks from spilling out between now and December 2017.
