Riot Games has released a new League of Legends cinematic titled A New Dawn. The six minute long video shows a group of champions battling it out in a dense, green forest. There doesn’t seem to be any major announcements or changes that led to the video’s release, it is just a way to get fans excited to play the game and possibly bring in a few new players at the same time.

In the behind-the-scenes video, which can be viewed below, Riot developers explain that the major motivation for the cinematic was the expansion of the League of Legends universe. Making the video has caused them to flesh out these characters that they had already created for the game. Focusing on how they would act in the situations portrayed in the video allowed them to decide on personality traits that they otherwise could have ignored.

League of Legends is a MOBA, or multiplayer online battle arena, where teams of five square off on a three lane map. The main goal is to destroy the other team’s Nexus, or main hub. Various obstacles stand in your way though, and you’ll have to use complex team strategies to overcome the other team.

League of Legends was initially inspired by Defense of the Ancients, a Warcraft III mod, and has quickly become the most played PC game in the world. Over 67 million people play League of Legends per month, with 7.5 million being online during peak hours. The game is free-to-play, allowing players to unlock new character customization or other in-game items using real money. Using this method the game has seen amazing success, generating $624 million in revenue for 2013.

The League of Legends World Championships, similar to the recent The International tournament for DOTA 2, take place every year. Last year’s tournament had a prize of $1 million and drew 32 million online viewers.
