Today is Pokèmon Day and Nintendo celebrated in a big way, announcing the long awaited and highly anticipated eighth generation titles Pokèmon Sword and Shield. Featuring new Pokèmon, a new region, and seemingly enhanced features, this is a brand new adventure in the world of Pokèmon. It will arrive later this year on Switch.

The seven minute presentation was short on some details, but the opening trailer alone was surely more than many had expected out of the Nintendo Direct presentation. Players will explore the brand new Galar Region, adventuring to become the true champion. The show also showed off the three new starters: Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble. Joinging these three new characters will certainly be many more to discover within this new world.

While more from the series was teased, little else was shown beyond some quick gameplay shots. They appeared to be similar in style and quality to what was seen in the two Let’s Go titles for Switch. Enhancements will likely come in the gameplay though, with these representing main line experiences, while those were off-shoots tailored more toward players of Niantic’s mobile game.

Pokèmon Sword and Shield are confirmed for a late 2019 release date on Nintendo Switch.
