Last year, Puyo Puyo eSports was released in Japan, which served as a version of the classic puzzle game that, as you might be able to tell from its name, focused more on its multiplayer aspect, in a competitive eSports-like fashion. Now, this version of the game is coming to the West under the title Puyo Puyo Champions.
Sega recently announced that Puyo Puyo Champions will be releasing in the West on May 7 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The game will focus on its local and online competitive multiplayer modes and will cost just $9.99 from digital retailers.
For those unfamiliar with the Puyo Puyo name, it’s a puzzle game series that debuted in the 90s and has gone on to receive many different iterations. If you don’t know the series by its original name, you may also know it as Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine or Kirby’s Avalanche. There was even a crossover puzzle game released a few years ago called Puyo Puyo Tetris, which meshed the gameplay of Puyo Puyo, which involves trying to get falling blobs of the same color to touch each other, with the gameplay of another classic puzzle game series, Tetris.
