Rampage debuted in arcades back in 1986 by Bally Midway and was brought to many different platforms over the years via ports and a few sequels. When thinking of potential video games to have a movie based on, Rampage definitely wouldn’t be at the top of the list, but the previously announced movie based on the property is set to start filming relatively soon.

Back in 2011, it was first announced that a movie based on Rampage was in development, which certainly surprised most people. 2015 brought the news that the movie had found a star in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, along with a director in San Andreas director Brad Peyton, which happened to also star Johnson.

The talk was that the movie would be starting production in March according to reports last year but Johnson posted an image to his Instagram that was accompanied by a very long text post discussing just when filming would start for the Rampage movie.

Spent my Friday night at our Warner Bros offices in a 6hr script session with these rampaging rockstars.
Our RAMPAGE (next movie I’ll make) writers, producers, director and star (occasionally me). Even though this took us deep into Friday night and we all have families and stuff to do – this kind of meeting is so critical to our movie’s success. Everyone’s instincts were firing on the highest of levels. My fav moment from this merciless 6hr meeting was when I shared with this group that there’s an equity and trust I’ve built with my audience that they trust me to take them on an epic ride, and always do our best to send them home happy. A very cool moment to see everyone’s eyes light and heads start to nod.
To win on any level you gotta have teamwork and collaboration and cant thank everyone enough in this room for their energy and focus. You truly helped us move the needle.
And Wendy Jane you’re Superwoman for your creative brilliance and putting up with all these asshole’s dumb guy jokes. Not me of course, I’m a gentleman. ?
Next stop for me in my research – the Primate division at the Atlanta Zoo (my character’s a Primatologist & head of an anti poaching unit in Rwanda). Really informative and educational character to play and project
to work on.
More to come. Start shooting this APRIL.

There is no question that Dwayne Johnson is one of the biggest names in Hollywood these days, with Baywatch sure to be a success when it comes out. He has also been attached to play Black Adam for DC as well for awhile, but it sounds like Rampage is his very next project coming up.

What do you think of the idea of a Rampage movie? Is the best idea for a video game movie to be something that is such a basic idea that leaves the script writer and the director more freedom, or something that sticks closer to an easier to adapt piece of source material? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
