A teenager in Kent, England, pretended he could not walk so he could steal beer from a supermarket. Davey Brown, 19, sat in a wheelchair and hid bottles of alcohol under a jacket on his lap. But when a security guard tried to stop him, Brown did something no one expected. His violent actions that day got him sent to prison for more than three years.
The whole thing happened at a Sainsbury’s store in Staplehurst on June 3. Security cameras caught everything on video. Brown sat in the wheelchair while someone else pushed him through the store. They were heading for the exit with the stolen beer when a guard stepped in front of them, according to The Sun.
That is when things got really bad. Brown jumped out of the wheelchair and threw the whole crate of beer at the security guard’s head. When that did not work, he started grabbing cans one by one and throwing those too. He was trying anything he could to get away. One of the guards got hurt badly enough that he had to go to the hospital.
He clearly wasn’t sorry about what he did
Police found Brown about half an hour later and arrested him. They also found out that before going to the store that day, Brown had crashed his car into another parked vehicle. He was driving without insurance too.
When police arrested him, Brown was caught on body camera acting very aggressive. He told the officers he did not care what they had and threatened to break every bone in their faces. He kept making threats even after they took him into custody. He showed no regret at all for what he had done.
Brown lives in Winch’s Garth in Staplehurst. He was charged with robbery, fighting in public, damaging property twice, assault, making threats, and driving without insurance. He said he was guilty of everything when he went to court at Maidstone Crown Court. On Thursday, the judge gave him three years and one month in prison. He also lost his right to drive.
Another person was with Brown that day. A 17-year-old boy also got arrested for his part in what happened. He got six months in a youth prison, similar to how other young offenders have faced consequences for their actions.
PC Ricky Strong was the officer who looked into the case. He talked about how dangerous Brown was. “Brown is a violent man who endangered another motorist, attacked a security guard and their colleague, and made threats to attending police officers,” he said. He also said Brown hurt a man who was just trying to do his job and needed hospital care because of it. The prison time means Brown cannot hurt anyone else for a while.
This case shows a bigger problem happening in stores across the UK. People who work in security are dealing with more and more violence when they try to stop shoplifters. They put themselves at risk every day just to keep stores safe, and employers must make difficult decisions about employee behavior both on and off the job.
