Disney CEO Bob Iger jumped the gun a bit with his Star Wars Episode 8 announcement that filming had begun it seems, as the company has just now released a new video officially confirming it, while showing a bit of behind the scenes production. *Warning: Spoilers follow* Showing the epic conclusion to Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens, the Star Wars Episode 8 Production Announcement video, which you can check out below, shows the movie opening on Luke Skywalker an Rey in the same situation that they ended the first movie.
Rey has finally found Luke after he went missing following the betrayal of Kylo Ren and the murder of his Jedi disciples. She offers him his lightsaber and he stares at her. It looks like this scene will be reshot for this film, probably with it extending into new story bits once the movie really begins.
In the video you can see the new director for Star Wars Episode 8, Rian Johnson, who has taken over for J.J. Abrams. Johnson has been responsible for some truly fantastic projects over the last few years, with him directing Brick, Looper, and multiple episodes of Breaking Bad. Many are hoping that his directing style will bring something new to the Star Wars franchise, after Episode 7 stuck so closely to the usual story beats and themes.
