Nintendo loves saving one big surprise for last during their E3 presentations, and they certainly had one for E3 2019. After an info-packed show they closed with a trailer that many thought would be DLC for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but turned out to be a full blown sequel for Nintendo Switch. Not much was revealed past that, but the short clips alone are enough to speculate about what The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (or whatever it ends up being titled) will be like.

First off, the trailer seems to focus more on the character of Princess Zelda. Could she be a playable character? If not, she at least seems to be adventuring along with Link, rather than serving as the goal of his journey. In the clip, Link and Zelda are journeying deep beneath Hyrule for some unknown reason. It seems like they’re looking for something, as a dark corruption similar to Ganon’s spreads around them. They find a corpse which presumably is Ganon’s, but another being is sapping his energy, possibly bringing him back to life.

This trailer is pretty story focused, so it will be interesting to see if that continues into the game itself. Breath of the Wild had some story pieces to it, but it sat in the background of the open-world adventure itself. Breath of the Wild 2 could bring the series back to a more linear approach, or double down on the open-world stuff. It’s anyone’s guess at the moment, and don’t expect much more info any time soon. This was clearly an early announcement, without even a hint of a release date.
