The Wii U Gamecube adapter has been one of the most sought after items for the last few months. Debuting alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the peripheral simply allows gamers to use the Gamecube controller with their Wii U, but due to hardware shortages the devices have been almost impossible to find, eventually showing up in bundles and on eBay for immense mark ups. Hopefully those days are over with today’s release of the first third party Wii U Gamecube Adapter, which is available now on Play Asia.
This is a GameCube controller adaptor that allows you to play any of your favorite Wii/Wii U games, with as few restrictions as possible.
The device retails for $33.99, which is a bit more than the $19.99 price tag for the official adapter from Nintendo. However, this one comes qith a Smash Bros. branded Gamecube controller, making it a definite bargain. The only real downside is that this adapter only supports one controller, meaning you can’t get the epic four player action going without buying extra.
There is a benefit added in though, as the Play Asia adapter seems to work with more than just Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. “The Play-Asia.com x Mayflash Adaptor is a GameCube controller adaptor that allows you to play any of your favorite Wii/Wii U games, with as few restrictions as possible. With next to no input lag, a turbo setting, and compatibility with any game playable with the Wii Classic Controller or Wii Classic Controller Pro, the Mayflash is the best answer for those truly in love with the GameCube controller.” This means you’ll even be able to play Mario Kart 8, or really almost any other Wii U game using what many feel is the best controller of all time.
Without testing the device to be sure we can’t verify how well this adapter will work. Since it seems to make the Gamecube controller function as a Pro Controller the analog shoulder triggers probably don’t work like they would with an actual Gamecube. But that is a small price to pay to have full functionality with other games on top of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.
