A lot of AAA video games came out in May 2016 and Sony’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End managed to top everything else. Thanks to a strong month of game releases, software sales were up in 2016 compared to 2015.

As reported by VentureBeat, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was the best selling video game for May 2016. In second place came Doom 2016 followed by Overwatch in third and Battleborn in fourth. The rest of the top 10 consisted of older video games.

NPD analyst, Liam Callahan, said in a statement that Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End had the best first month sales for any Uncharted game. He said it was remarkable since Uncharted 3 came out during Fall 2011 which is when most people go out and spend money. Naughty Dog proved with A Thief’s End that people will buy games no matter what time of year it is as long as it’s good.

Doom 2016 also improved sales compared to that of Doom 3. As for Overwatch, it came out in late May but sales were super strong. Callahan feels Overwatch could have outsold Doom had it came out earlier in the month. Software sales as a whole were up 18 percent compared to last year.

There wasn’t much news on the hardware front today. Hardware sales were down 10 percent compared to 2015 mainly because not many people are buying portable consoles now. Not to mention recent price drops have decreased the dollar sales. However, sales for the PS4 and Xbox One consoles still remain healthy compared to the last generation.
