Valve announced today that they are actively working on developing a new category of living room hardware, and has opened a beta for their new “Steam Machine”. Running on the recently announced Steam OS, these Steam Machines will be coming to market in 2014.

Valve says that these devices are far from finished products, and has opened enrollment for a beta for the hardware. “We believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it’s also completely upgradable and open,” the company said on an announcement page.

A Q/A on the page suggests that the Steam Machines will be made by different manufacturers in a number of varieties. For more details and to enroll in the beta, head to Steam.
