‘Why Are You Still Watching?’: Woman Issues Urgent Warning After Friend’s Stolen Car Leads Criminal Straight To His Doorstep

He changed the locks just in time.

A woman on social media just shared a safety tip that everyone with a car needs to hear. Sarah Kimberly, who posts on TikTok under the username @carmummy, told a scary story about what happened to her friend. It’s making people think twice about how they use their car’s GPS.

Her friend had his car stolen while he was at work. Someone took his keys and drove off with his vehicle. But things got way worse when the thief found something in the car’s GPS. The man’s home address was saved in the system. This was really bad news because his wife and young kids were at home.

Luckily, the man saw his car getting stolen as it happened. He moved fast and changed his garage remote code right away. He also got new locks and did everything else he needed to do to keep his home safe. Kimberly told viewers, “If you prefer safety over convenience, remove your home address from the GPS in your car. Now. Why are you still watching?” She wanted people to stop what they were doing and delete their home address from their car immediately.

Not Everyone Faces The Same Risk

The video got over 72,200 views and a lot of people had things to say about it. But not everyone thinks this is something they need to worry about. One person named Nina said, “Lucky for me I own a 2011 manual car with no screen.” Her older car doesn’t have a GPS screen, so she feels safer. Another user named Lianna said something interesting. She wrote, “I haven’t set it and it still comes up going home.” This means some cars might track where you go even if you don’t tell them to.

People in the comments had some good ideas about how to stay safe. Some said you should put in an address that’s close to your house but not exactly where you live. Others suggested using your neighbor’s address or even the local police station. One person named Joshi said, “true. however they would need to steel your phone in order to gain that info if.” This person was making the point that thieves might need other things too, like your phone, to really cause problems.

This is a true story. Not something we should ever have to think about until something like this happens to you or someone you know it wouldn’t even cross your mind… #carsafety #roadsafety #newcar #carshopping #carreview #carreviews #familycar

The numbers are pretty scary when you look at them. More than 850,000 cars were stolen in 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That means someone’s car gets stolen every 37 seconds in America. If it happens to you, you should call the police right away and also call your insurance company. You also need to protect your personal information because thieves might have access to more than just your car.

There are some easy things you can do to keep your car safer. Always take your keys with you and never leave them sitting in the car. Roll up your windows and lock the doors every time you park. Try to park in spots that have good lighting, not in dark areas where thieves can work without being seen. Don’t leave anything valuable where people can see it through your windows. Similar to how one musician protected himself during a home invasion, being ready ahead of time really matters.

Kimberly’s main advice is simple. Delete your home address from your car’s GPS. Also, don’t keep any mail or papers in your car that show where you live. It might take a few extra seconds to type in your address when you’re driving home, but it could stop something really bad from happening. While some situations need quick thinking, like this bride’s emotional gift to her groom, this safety tip just takes a minute or two to set up and could save you from a lot of trouble down the road.
