Woman orders milkshake at In-N-Out and accidentally discovers ‘ridiculous’ secret about the menu, asks ‘what year is it?’

They probably didn't hear about inflation

A tattoo artist named Brookelyn Kelly recently learned something surprising about In-N-Out Burger that most customers do not know. The fast food chain sells milkshake sizes that are not shown anywhere on their menu, and the prices are surprisingly cheap.

Kelly posted a TikTok video about what she found, and it now has more than 235,000 views. She said that when you look at the menu at In-N-Out, you only see “shakes” listed for around $3 without any size choices. But if you ask, they actually have large and extra-large sizes too. An extra-large shake only costs $5, which made Kelly wonder out loud, “What year is it at In-N-Out Burger?”

Kelly told BroBible that she found this out completely by accident while ordering at the drive-thru with her friend. “I was at the drive thru with my friend and we were ordering and I said to my friend that I wish they had bigger sizes of shakes and the guy said they did! I was like what?!” she said. She was really surprised because most other restaurants charge anywhere from $8 to $12 for a shake that big.

This is actually a pretty great deal in 2025

In-N-Out Burger first opened back in 1948 in Baldwin Park, California. The company is still owned by the same family today, with Lynsi Snyder running things as president. She is the granddaughter of the people who started the restaurant.

They have a few hundred locations now, mostly in the western and northwestern parts of the United States, but they have never sold franchises like most other fast food places do.

People really love In-N-Out for more than just the food. The restaurant regularly gets voted as one of the best fast food chains by customers. They also have a good reputation for treating their workers better than a lot of other fast food companies.

Kelly is a huge fan herself and said that In-N-Out was the first burger she ever actually liked, which happened when she was 20 years old.

A lot of people responded to Kelly’s video with excitement and surprise. One person named Drew wrote that In-N-Out keeps prices low so people keep coming back, just like how Costco sells their rotisserie chickens for only $4.99.

Another commenter asked why other places are so expensive. Someone named Chris also shared another secret, saying you can order a Neapolitan shake even though it is not on the menu. This is not the first time fast food customers have shared surprising discoveries about chain restaurants.

For Kelly, finding out about the bigger shake sizes was really helpful. She said she likes having a “frozen creamy treat in the morning” but one regular shake was never quite enough. Before this, she would sometimes order two shakes, but now she can just get one large size instead.

The $5 price is especially interesting when you think about how much everything costs now compared to the past. In the movie Pulp Fiction from 1994, there is a scene where a milkshake costs $5 and one character thinks that is really expensive. If you adjust that price for inflation, it would be $11 today.

Fast food chains often surprise customers with unexpected menu items or policies, but In-N-Out keeps charging the same amount that seemed expensive 30 years ago.
