Skyscanner just named the cheapest place to fly to this summer and it’s being called the budget Alps

Poprad, Slovakia has been named the cheapest destination for Brits to fly to this summer, with average flight costs from the UK sitting at around $70 in June and $69 in September. The data comes from Skyscanner, as highlighted by LADbible, and positions Poprad as a budget-friendly alternative to the Alps. For comparison, a flight to Malaga averages around £178, making the Slovak city a significantly cheaper option for British travelers.

Poprad sits at the gateway to the High Tatras, Slovakia’s highest mountain range, and draws visitors with around 35 valleys and 110 glacial lakes. The terrain is suited to hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, but the city also offers thermal baths for those after something more relaxed.

Streets lined with rustic 18th and 19th-century architecture add a cultural dimension, and the spindle-shaped square Namestie sv. Egidia has become a draw in its own right. The Podtatranske muzeum and the Tatra Gallery round out the options for those interested in local history and art.

Timing your trip to Poprad could save you even more money

Once on the ground, day-to-day costs remain low. A local draft beer runs no more than $3.85, a meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs around $16.50, and a mid-range dinner for two tops out at roughly $99. A single public transport journey is about $2.20. According to TravelDojo, a daily budget of between $47 and $113 is generally enough to cover accommodation, alpine dining, and thermal spa visits.

Skyscanner points to the week of June 29 to July 5 as the cheapest travel window for summer 2026, with Friday identified as the most cost-effective day to fly. Quieter months like June and September also bring shorter queues and easier restaurant reservations. For travelers already watching budgets amid Spirit Airlines facing financial collapse, the low-cost routes into Poprad represent one of the more stable cheap-flight options currently available out of the UK.

While Malaga, Faro, and Ibiza dominate most summer popularity lists, Poprad stands apart as the strongest option for cost-conscious travelers. The city delivers mountain scenery, historic architecture, natural hot springs, and a working cultural centre at a price point that most popular European summer destinations cannot match. Visitors have noted that an Orlando tourist attraction making headlines for the wrong reasons serves as a reminder that not all travel draws hold up to scrutiny, but Poprad’s offering is built on natural and historical assets that have drawn visitors for generations.
