Energy secretary Chris Wright says there may be no Iran nuclear deal, just destroying its capabilities instead

Energy secretary Chris Wright has indicated that the United States might not reach a nuclear agreement with Iran to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons. As reported by The Guardian, during a series of appearances, Wright addressed the current state of stalled negotiations and the ongoing conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. 

Wright suggested that the path forward may involve alternative strategies to address what he described as the existential threat of a nuclear armed Iran. When asked about the possibility of a deal during an interview on ABC, Wright stated, “There may not be a nuclear agreement.” 

He outlined that the alternative could involve further military action designed to dismantle the infrastructure required for Iran to manufacture and deploy such missiles. Regarding this approach, he noted, “It may be simply [a case of] destroying their capabilities to do it” or else “an agreement may await the next administration in Iran”.

He says the United States is always open for a deal

While these comments suggest a shift toward more aggressive measures, Wright also clarified his stance on diplomatic efforts during a separate appearance on CBS. He maintained that the United States is not abandoning diplomacy and remains, “always open for a deal”. 

He explained that the primary function of the United States military in the Gulf region at this moment is to disrupt Iranian energy exports. According to Wright, the strategy involves economic pressure to force a shift in leadership or national policy, as he stated, “We are strangling their economy to try to bring either a change in policy from the existing regime or a new regime”.

The diplomatic and nuclear discussions between the two nations have effectively stalled following the collapse of a June interim agreement. That previous deal failed to produce a lasting settlement regarding the future of the Iranian nuclear program, which reportedly sustained significant damage during United States strikes last summer. 

The security of the Strait of Hormuz was another major point of discussion. In an interview with CNN, Wright declined to label the waterway as safe for oil tankers unless those vessels are under the protection of the United States navy. 

He did not provide a definitive answer regarding whether the navy would need to maintain a presence in the region indefinitely to secure this energy corridor as the situation continues to unfold. When pressed on the nature of the current engagement, Wright acknowledged that the situation remains tense, stating, “We’re still in a conflict, for sure”.
