President Trump is looking at serious options to hit back at Iran after the country killed more than 50 protesters. This happened even after the president gave direct warnings. US officials say the government has started early talks about a possible attack. They are looking at large air strikes that would target several military sites inside Iran.
Officials were quick to say this is normal planning. While different options have been discussed, they are just part of regular military preparation. One official said there has been no movement of military equipment or troops, so an attack is not coming right away. But these talks show the White House is taking this very seriously.
According to Daily Mail, the talks started after a deadly night in Iran. An Iranian rights group reported 65 total deaths as of January 9. This included 50 protesters and 15 security personnel. Doctors said many injured protesters came to hospitals with serious injuries. They had head wounds, broken arms and legs, and deep cuts from severe beatings.
Trump’s warning to Iran becomes more urgent as death toll climbs
President Trump had warned Iran’s leaders before. He said if they kept killing protesters, they would be “hit very hard” by the United States. He said it looked like Iran’s leaders were “in big trouble.” The president has been taking a firm stance on foreign policy matters, recently showing his serious approach to territorial expansion.
After hearing about the rising death count, the president posted on his social media on Saturday. He said the US is “ready to help” the Iranian people. “Iran is looking for FREEDOM, perhaps like never before. The USA stands ready to help!!!,” Trump wrote. He also said the US is the “hottest and most successful country anywhere in the world.”
The protests have been going on for 13 days. They have spread to more than 220 towns and cities across Iran’s 31 provinces. The protests started because people were angry about the rising cost of living. But they have grown into a bigger movement calling for an end to the religious system that has ruled Iran since 1979.
Iran’s government has responded with force. The Revolutionary Guards and other law enforcement are trying to stop the protesters. Iran’s attorney general, Mohammad Movahedi Azad, gave a scary warning. He said anyone in the protests would be seen as “an enemy of God.” Under Iran’s laws, this can be punished by death. Even people who help protesters face charges.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, attacked President Trump. He said Trump’s hands are “stained with the blood of Iranians.” He claimed protesters were ruining their streets “to please the president of the United States.” Trump has been navigating complex international relationships, including his recent diplomatic conversation with President Petro.
But support for Iranian people keeps coming from Washington. Senator Lindsey Graham said this is “truly not the Obama administration when it comes to standing up to the Iranian ayatollah.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio also showed support, saying “The United States supports the brave people of Iran.”
