‘I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland’: Trump leaks Macron’s private text offering emergency Paris summit with unexpected guest list

Destroyed decades of diplomatic norms.

President Trump shared a private text message from French President Emmanuel Macron overnight. The message shows European leaders are worried about Trump’s plans for Greenland. A French official confirmed the text is real.

In the message, Macron tried to keep things friendly while also showing he was confused. He wrote, “My friend, We are totally in line on Syria. We can do great things on Iran.” But then he added, “I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland.”

According to Politico, Macron suggested holding an emergency G7 meeting in Paris after the Davos summit. He proposed inviting several countries to the meeting. He wrote, “i can invite the ukrainians, the danish, the syrians and the russians in the margins. let us have a dinner together in Paris together on thursday before you go back to the us. Emmanuel.”

European leaders are rushing to respond to Trump’s territorial ambitions

Before sharing Macron’s text, Trump said he talked with NATO chief Mark Rutte. They agreed to hold a meeting with different groups in Davos about Greenland. Trump wrote, “As I expressed to everyone, very plainly, Greenland is imperative for National and World Security. There can be no going back – On that, everyone agrees!”

The rushed diplomacy happened after Trump announced 10 percent tariffs on eight European countries. These countries had worked together to stop the U.S. president’s plans to expand American territory. Trump recently declared himself the tariff king while warning these nations about consequences.

Trump also shared a photo that showed a fake map in the background. The map showed Canada, Greenland, and Venezuela all under the U.S. flag. This suggests the administration wants control over more than just Greenland in the Western Hemisphere.

Trump then criticized Britain for planning to give the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The island of Diego Garcia, which has an important U.S. military base, is part of these islands. Trump said Britain was “planning to give away the Island of Diego Garcia, the site of a vital U.S. Military Base, to Mauritius, and to do so FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER.”

The leaked text and Trump’s posts show growing tension between the U.S. and European allies. Trump has been making bold moves on multiple fronts, including his decision to pardon a former governor that raised eyebrows about timing. European leaders are trying to understand and respond to Trump’s territorial goals, while Trump continues to push his agenda publicly.
