Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene called President Trump’s response to the tragic killing of acclaimed actor and director Rob Reiner “classless” and completely inappropriate for the office of the president of the United States, as per The Hill. Greene, who has recently had some very public breaks with the president despite being a fierce ally in the past, addressed the controversy during an appearance on CNN.
Greene was asked specifically about President Trump’s initial comments, where he had dismissed Reiner as “deranged” and “bad for our country.” “I thought that statement was absolutely, completely below the office of the president of the United States, classless, and it was just wrong,” Greene said about the president’s reaction.
The news that shocked Hollywood this weekend involved the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, who were found stabbed to death at their Los Angeles home. Authorities charged their 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the horrific incident. Instead of offering condolences or compassion, President Trump responded to the news by focusing on Reiner’s prolific history of progressive political advocacy and Democratic fundraising.
The president stated that the director had died of “Trump derangement syndrome”
She stressed that the tragedy was about a family ripped apart by deeper issues. “It’s a tragic murder. It’s a family ripped apart,” Greene explained during the interview. She noted that based on public reports, the core issues at play were drug abuse and mental illness. Nick Reiner, the son who was charged, had reportedly spoken publicly about his struggles with drug abuse, and he had even worked on a semi-autobiographical film with his father that touched on that topic.
Greene argued that the president missed a massive opportunity to speak directly to the struggles that countless Americans face every single day. “And I think the president should have responded with compassion and talked about those issues,” Greene insisted. “He didn’t have to make it about politics. And I think that was, it was really below what we expect our president to talk like.”
It’s clear that Greene isn’t alone in her reaction. She pointed out that even President Trump’s most loyal base, the “MAGA faithful,” found his comments to be unacceptable. We saw a major fallout happen yesterday with his statements. “MAGA faithful reacted big time, and they called it out. It’s all over social media,” Greene confirmed.
This reaction is particularly relevant given the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Many on the political right were very vocal in their condemnation of the political left for what they saw as a failure to strongly denounce Kirk’s killing. According to Greene, this context made President Trump’s comments on Reiner sting even more for his supporters.
“People, his supporters, including myself, we didn’t appreciate hearing the president, who himself was shot, and after Charlie Kirk’s horrific murder,” Greene said. She believes that regardless of whether you agree with Rob Reiner politically, there was simply no reason for the statement the president made. It was a moment that demanded compassion, not political jabs, and that’s a perspective even his staunchest allies seem to share.
