Mark Hamill posted an AI Trump grave image, and the White House went ballistic, now his new caption is going to ruffle more feathers

Mic drop moment.

Mark Hamill has issued a clarification regarding a controversial social media post that drew a sharp rebuke from the White House, and his latest response is already generating further debate. The actor, best known for portraying Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars franchise, found himself at the center of a political firestorm, after he shared an AI-generated image on his Bluesky account. The image depicted Donald Trump in a shallow grave, accompanied by the text overlay, “If Only.”

The White House, utilizing the Rapid Response 47 account on X, stated, “Mark Hamill is one sick individual,” and went on to claim, “These Radical Left lunatics ‌just can’t help themselves. This kind of rhetoric is exactly what has inspired three assassination attempts in two years against our President.”

Hamill, who has established himself as a prominent and vocal critic of the US president over the years, opted to remove the original post on Thursday. Following the deletion, he replaced it with a message intended to clarify his position. “Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate,” Hamill wrote. He further explained his intent by adding that he believes Trump “should live long enough to be held accountable for his crimes.”

In this new caption, Mark Hamill explicitly stated that he was not calling for the president to die

The escalation of this conflict occurs against a backdrop of increasing political tension and violence across the nation. Reports have highlighted several instances of physical aggression in recent years. For example, a gunman attempted to access the president during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington DC last month.

Furthermore, the political landscape has been marked by the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at a Utah university campus in September of last year. Other incidents include the 2022 hammer attack on the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as the killing of Democratic state lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband in Minnesota last year.

Accurate Edit for Clarity:"He should live long enough to… be held accountable for his… crimes." Actually, I was wishing him the opposite of dead, but apologize if you found the image inappropriate. 💙-mh

While the current administration has condemned Hamill’s post, the president himself has faced scrutiny for his own rhetoric. The Atlantic documented 40 instances in 2024 where the president reportedly incited or praised violence against US citizens. One specific episode noted in the report involved the president speaking about training guns on the face of Liz Cheney, a Republican former congresswoman and political adversary.

Despite the controversy surrounding the Bluesky post, Hamill continued to maintain a high-profile presence alongside other political figures. On Monday, he appeared in a short video posted to YouTube alongside former president Barack Obama.

The video was created to promote the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The promotional clip utilized a style reminiscent of the opening titles from the Star Wars films, featuring a caption that read, “Hope has a new home.” During the video, Obama and Hamill discussed the upcoming center, describing it as “a force for change.”

This recent event marks a significant shift from Hamill’s appearance at the White House in 2024. During that visit, the actor, who has more than 5 million followers on X, met with Joe Biden in the Oval Office. At the time, Hamill expressed his admiration for the president, calling him “the most legislatively successful president in my lifetime.”

During the press briefing that day, Hamill joked about his unexpected role, asking reporters if they had the actor leading a press briefing on their bingo card. He also shared a lighthearted anecdote about his interaction with the president, noting that he asked if he could call him “Joe-B-Wan Kenobi.”

The presence of Hollywood figures in political discourse remains a point of contention. During that 2024 visit, some journalists questioned why Hamill, an individual who has never held elected office, was being given access to the Oval Office. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the appearance at the time, stating that Hamill is “someone who is very much invested in our country, very much invested in the direction of this country.”
