Newsom spent Trump’s entire State of the Union trolling him on social media, and the White House told him to ‘shut his filthy mouth’

California Governor Gavin Newsom used President Trump’s State of the Union address as an opportunity to mock him on social media, which quickly drew a sharp response from the White House. Newsom’s posts targeted everything from the president’s hair to his cabinet members.

According to The Daily Beast, as soon as Trump walked into the House chamber, Newsom posted on X, poking fun at the president’s hair. He wrote, “Oh no, Donald. You need some of my hair gel!!!” The comment was directed at Trump as he greeted Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

Trump has long been vocal about his hair. He signed an executive order aimed at removing water pressure restrictions on showerheads, complaining that he had to “stand under the shower for 15 minutes until it gets wet” and that water came out “drip, drip, drip,” calling it “ridiculous” because he likes “to take a nice shower to take care of my beautiful hair.”

The White House fired back hard at Newsom’s mockery

The White House did not hold back in its response. A spokesperson said Newsom, who is seen as a potential 2028 presidential candidate, “should shut his filthy mouth and apologize to Black people for demeaning them earlier this week.” The spokesperson also said Newsom “should be more concerned about his own appearance, which quite frankly many people have serious questions about, instead of talking about others.”

The “demeaning” comment refers to accusations from some on the right that Newsom made a racist remark while speaking with Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens days earlier. Newsom strongly denied these claims, criticizing what he called “fake f—ing outrage.” 

Trump has also been making bold moves on the world stage lately, including sending a hospital boat to Greenland as part of his push for U.S. influence in the region. Earlier on the day of the State of the Union, Newsom’s team also mimicked Trump’s well-known social media posting style, saying they were intentionally pulling attention away from the president. 

One post on X read: “WOW!!! JUST GOT A CALL FROM A VERY RELIABLE SOURCE (TOP LEVEL) THAT DONALD TRUMP IS FURIOUS RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I, GAVIN C. NEWSOM (GOVERNOR OF THE FREE WORLD) HAVE COMPLETELY ‘HIJACKED’ THE NEWS ON HIS ‘BIG SPEECH DAY’ WITHOUT EVEN TRYING.”

Newsom’s press office kept posting throughout Trump’s 108-minute address to Congress, which set a record for length. One post included an altered image of the president’s cabinet members, which Newsom’s team sarcastically labeled “The Epstein Cabinet.” Trump’s foreign policy moves have also been drawing attention abroad, as France recently blocked his ambassador from meeting ministers, raising questions about U.S.-Europe relations.

This is not the first time Newsom has gone after Trump personally. He has previously mocked the president’s frequent hand bruising and blurred out part of his TIME magazine cover, showing a clear pattern of using personal jabs as part of his political strategy against Trump.
