Democratic strategist James Carville believes President Donald Trump will “just walk away” from the presidency next year. Carville, who is 81, made his prediction in a video for Politicon published, saying that Trump’s time in office is limited because “everything that he tries blows up in his face.”
“I’m telling you, I think he’s just going to quit next year by this time,” Carville stated, adding, “I think he’s just going to f—ing walk away because the Democrats control the House and the Senate.” Recent polls show Democrats holding a modest lead ahead of the midterm elections. Carville believes that with a Democratic-controlled Congress, “No one’s going to pay attention to him.”
Carville also pointed to the country’s troubled fiscal condition as another major factor, describing it as “beyond in the ditch.” According to The Daily Beast, he named the ongoing conflict with Iran as his third reason, calling “the Iran thing” a “catastrophe of the first order.”
The Iran conflict and economic fallout give Carville’s prediction real weight
The conflict began on February 28, 2026, when U.S. and Israeli forces launched joint aerial bombing operations against Iran. Since then, the situation has taken a heavy toll. U.S. Central Command reported 13 American military personnel killed and over 200 wounded since the conflict began.
Six American troops died on March 1 after an Iranian drone strike hit a mobile operations center in Port Shuaiba, Kuwait. Six more died when a KC-135 refueling aircraft crashed in Iraq last Thursday, as confirmed by the Pentagon.
The economic impact has also been significant. After Iran shut down the Strait of Hormuz on March 2, oil prices spiked sharply. Trump has claimed that several countries are working to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, though he refused to name any of them when asked. The national average price for a gallon of gas has jumped to $3.80, up from $2.94 just a month ago.
Carville has been openly harsh about Trump in recent weeks. In a March 7 Politicon video, he said, “You’re right! I got Trump Derangement Syndrome, I hate the motherf—er,” adding, “I don’t want to get better, I want to get worse.” He criticized Trump for starting the war without congressional approval and for appointing what he called “incompetent f—ing buffoons” to lead federal agencies.
“Pray for people who are paying more for gas for some idiotic f—ing war that he never even told us why we’re there,” Carville said. “He still doesn’t know why the f— we’re there.” Trump has also drawn attention for other off-script moments, including when he publicly revealed a congressman’s terminal illness on live TV, prompting Speaker Mike Johnson to immediately tell him that the information had not been made public.
In response, White House spokesperson Olivia Wales dismissed Carville as “a stone-cold loser who clearly suffers from a severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome.” She said “President Trump is the unequivocal leader of the Republican party, and he is committed to maintaining Republicans’ majority in Congress to continue delivering wins for the American people.”
Wales also stated that Trump was elected with a “resounding mandate to reverse disastrous Biden-era policies,” claiming he has delivered on border security, inflation, tax cuts, trade deals, drug pricing, and “peace through strength policies that eliminate national security threats to our Nation.” She concluded, “Only deranged Democrats like James Carville could oppose all these wins for the American people.”
