The Department of Education has just hung a banner honoring the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk outside its headquarters, a move that’s definitely stirring up some conversation as the country gears up to celebrate its 250th birthday, as reported by The Hill. Kirk, who founded Turning Point USA to champion conservative values on college campuses across the nation, was publicly assassinated just last year.
The incident happened on the campus of Utah Valley University, carried out by 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Robinson is now facing serious charges, including aggravated murder, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering, with prosecutors actively seeking the death penalty in this case.
President Trump and Vice President Vance have openly credited Kirk for his crucial role in helping them secure their victory in the 2024 election. So, it makes sense that the administration would want to recognize his contributions, but placing his image on a federal building is a pretty significant gesture.
The banner of Kirk hangs alongside separate tributes to Catharine Beecher and Booker T. Washington
Beecher is remembered for being a champion of women’s education, while Washington was a powerful advocate for education rights for Black people. Next to these, another banner reads, “Empowering our States to tell the Stories of our Heroes in American Education,” which sets the stage for the Department’s reasoning.
Savannah Newhouse, the press secretary for the Department of Education, explained the decision in a statement. She said, “We are proud to honor visionary leaders whose contributions have shaped the future of education for generations. Their work reflects Benjamin Franklin’s timeless belief that ‘an investment in knowledge pays the best interest.'”
Newhouse also added that as the country approaches its 250th milestone, this moment invites everyone to “join in the pursuit of fostering educational opportunity that empowers every learner to rise, contribute, and help shape a brighter future for generations yet to come.”
For the Trump administration, Kirk has been revered as a conservative activist, making his inclusion understandable from their perspective. However, pairing him with historical figures like Beecher and Washington, who are known for their profound and widely recognized contributions to education, certainly raises some eyebrows and sparks debate about the criteria for such honors.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a banner like this from a federal department recently. Earlier this year, the Department of Justice unveiled a banner featuring a photo of President Trump himself.
