Representative Thomas Massie, a Republican from Kentucky, has publicly said that his personal safety is at risk because he keeps pushing to release all the Jeffrey Epstein files. The Congressman believes his demand for justice for Epstein’s sex trafficking victims has made him a target of powerful and dangerous people, including people in the current administration.
Massie, who wrote the Epstein Transparency Act with Representative Ro Khanna, is not just facing normal political pressure. According to Mediaite, he is being attacked directly from the top. He told host Zach Weissmueller in an interview that he finds it “laughable when people say ‘I’m just doing this for the politics.'”
Massie pointed out that the most popular politician in his state, President Trump, is actively working against him. President Trump has promised to “primary” Massie over the lawmaker’s opposition to the Big Beautiful Bill. Massie admitted it would be much easier politically to get reelected if he just “ignored the Epstein files and called them a hoax,” but he is not willing to do that.
The push for truth became a personal mission after meeting survivors
For Massie, the decision to keep fighting for transparency became deeply “personal” after he met with several Epstein survivors. He knows that by chasing this truth, he is putting more than just his career on the line. “I’ve upset a lot of billionaires who obviously aren’t of high moral character and have done some really shady stuff,” he admitted, recognizing that his own “health and well-being could very be too” at risk.
What really strengthened Massie’s determination, and possibly increased his risk, was when he realized the Trump administration might be involved in a cover-up. He explained that this realization hit him after Attorney General Pam Bondi gave out folders labeled “The Epstein Files: Phase 1” to various influencers. Despite Trump’s frequent mentions in Epstein documents, the administration appeared reluctant to release further information.
Massie’s wife at the time asked him to find out when “Phase 2” would be released. When he asked Bondi that question in person, she dismissed the files. Bondi “basically said, ‘There’s nothing but child porn left, it’s disgusting and nobody would want to see it.'” That conversation, Massie explained, was the critical moment he knew “that the Trump administration had undertaken a cover-up and had no intention of releasing these files.”
This is not some small political disagreement. Massie stressed how important the documents and the scandal are, stating clearly, “This is bigger than Watergate.” He argued that if the Watergate scandal changed how people view the government, this situation “should definitely do the same.” Massie joins other Republicans who faced Trump’s wrath for opposing his agenda.
The level of fear Massie is experiencing is clearly visible in his public statements. Recently, a follower on X wrote that Massie should keep reminding the public that he is not suicidal and is a great swimmer. Massie responded right away with a detailed list of safety measures he takes.
He wanted everyone to know, “I am not suicidal. I eat healthy food. The brakes on my car and truck are in good shape. I practice good trigger discipline and never point a gun at anyone, including myself.” Massie added that there are “no deep pools of water on my farm and I’m a pretty good swimmer.”
