President Donald Trump has given Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán his “complete and total endorsement” for re-election. This comes just days after reports claimed Russian intelligence was discussing a fake assassination plot to boost Orbán’s campaign. Trump shared his support in a Truth Social post, praising Orbán as a “truly strong and powerful Leader, with a proven track record of delivering phenomenal results.”
He said Orbán “fights tirelessly for, and loves, his Great Country and People, just like I do for the United States of America.” Trump also highlighted Orbán’s work to “Protect Hungary, Grow the Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Immigration, and Ensure LAW AND ORDER,” urging Hungarians to “GET OUT AND VOTE FOR VIKTOR ORBÁN.”
According to The Daily Beast, this endorsement comes as Orbán faces a tough re-election battle in Hungary’s April 12 election. His close ties to Moscow and the country’s economic struggles have become major concerns for voters. The center-right Tisza party, led by Péter Magyar, a former insider in Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party, is currently leading in the polls by 9 percentage points.
The Russian interference allegations make Trump’s endorsement timing hard to ignore
A recent report claimed Russian intelligence operatives had discussed staging a fake assassination attempt on Orbán to boost his re-election campaign. President Trump himself survived a real assassination attempt during his 2024 campaign, when a gunman opened fire at a rally in Pennsylvania.
Trump’s foreign policy moves have been making waves beyond Europe too, with Cuba pushing back hard against Trump’s territorial demands drawing international attention. The same report also alleged that Hungary’s foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, had frequently leaked confidential European Union information to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.
One official reportedly stated that because of this, “every single EU meeting for years has basically had Moscow behind the table.” Orbán’s election rival, Péter Magyar, responded on X, posting that “Based on current information, Szijjártó appears to be colluding with Russia, thereby betraying Hungarian and European interests.”
Magyar added that “If confirmed, this would amount to treason, which carries a potential life sentence.” Szijjártó dismissed the allegations as “lies” and “fake news.” Trump and Orbán have had a long-standing relationship. Orbán was the first EU leader to back Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, and his most recent visit to Trump was in November 2025.
Orbán is also a well-known ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is considered one of Putin’s closest supporters within both NATO and the EU, particularly amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Hungary relies heavily on Russian energy, and during his November visit, Orbán discussed potential exemptions from U.S. sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies.
Meanwhile, Trump has also been dealing with new intelligence revealing what really happened with Iran, adding to an already complex foreign policy landscape. Trump’s endorsement puts him firmly behind a leader facing serious allegations of ties to Russian intelligence ahead of the April 12 election.
